UCLA Freshman Volunteer Day

Cassidy-Schmitt, VP, and George Young, superlative volunteer.

UCLA Freshmen and alumni volunteers, with (front row, L. to R.) Amy Rosenstein, BCR president; Sandrine Cassidy-Schmitt, BCR VP; and George Young, superlative volunteer.

September 26 was the 7th annual Volunteer Day for all UCLA incoming freshmen and transfer students. They joined continuing undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and community members to visit more than 40 sites across greater Los Angeles. Volunteers served at K-12 schools, food banks, parks, shelters, veterans’ facilities, and neighborhood centers. BCR’s creek cleanup at Centinela Avenue was one of those 40 volunteer activities.

More than 50 UCLA students and alumni  discovered Ballona Creek at Centinela, where the fresh water and the ocean water meet, where trash accumulates in the plants.  With the help of the Culver City High School BCR Club and the sponsorship of Mike Bonin’s Council District 11 and LA Office of Beautification, the results were impressive: in 2 hours, the group picked up 900 pounds of trash and 200 pounds of recyclables and hazardous waste that otherwise would have flowed down to the ocean directly, further harming our environment and wildlife.
Every piece counts.
BCR thanks these students for their efforts and wishes them a productive school year! Goooooo Bruins!
