Check out the outstanding photos of the birds of the Ballona Wetlands on our Facebook site: http://www.facebook.com/LosAngelesAudubon
The Ballona Wetlands consist of just over 600 state-owned acres of estuarine and brackish marshes, freshwater marsh and riparian habitats, seasonal wetlands and uplands of coastal sage scrub and dunes.
The Ballona Wetlands, and its surrounding ecosystem, host such wildlife as the California Killfish, California Least Tern, Belding’s Savannah sparrow, the Ballona Wallflower, Southern Tarplant, Lewis’ Primrose, and Great Blue Heron and Snowy Egret rookeries. About 300 bird species have been seen at Ballona, of which more than 200 have been observed at the Freshwater Marsh. Ballona Wetlands and the adjacent city-owned lagoons are a stop along the migratory Pacific Flyway.
Bird Walks are geared for the beginner/intermediate birders looking for an introduction to local birds and/or interested in reducing their carbon footprint by birding relatively close to home. LAAS birdwalks and field trips delve into identification, natural histories and interactions observed in the field. All are welcome on either event, but no pets or small children please. Appropriate for young bird watchers age 6 years and older. For further information contact Eleanor Osgood at birdwalks@laaudubon.org or call (310) 839-5420. Birdwalks DO NOT require advance sign-up, just show up at the specified meeting time and place.
Carpooling: Carpooling is encouraged! If you wish to share your name and contact information on a carpool list for any “no sign-up required” events, call (323) 876-0202. Please provide your contact information. Please include the date and/or destination of the event. Leave a message on the answering machine if there is no answer.
